What’s the Purpose of a Changing Robe?

Originally conceived as a convenient, private space to get warm, dry, and changed after watersports, the purpose of changing robes has since evolved. No longer the preserve of surfers and swimmers, nowadays hikers, campers, and even early morning dog walkers are sporting them. The appeal is clear: a weatherproof, cosy cocoon with ample space for all your accessories- whether you’ve been in the water or just want to keep snug and warm on land, the changing robe is king.

Is a Changing Robe Worth It?

I’ve spent many years wild swimming through the winter in England, and originally, I made do with my normal puffer coat. Having to dry off and try and change with just a towel while preserving my dignity in winter winds wasn’t the most fun! Once I bit the bullet and purchased a robe, my goodness, the difference was incredible- like getting a free upgrade to first class! Comfort, convenience, privacy, warmth… If you’re getting in the water regularly and haven’t made the upgrade to a changing robe yet, trust me- it’ll change your life for the better!

What’s the Difference Between Waterproof and Water-Resistant Changing Robes?

Put simply, the difference between waterproof and water-resistant changing robes is how dry they keep you in heavy rain. A fully waterproof changing robe should withstand the most extreme conditions, keeping you warm and dry inside. Water-resistant changing robes can repel light rain and moisture but likely won’t keep you bone-dry when the heavens open. Here are the key differences between the two:

    • Waterproof Changing Robes: Constructed from materials like treated polyester or nylon, they’ll typically feature a waterproof membrane that’s impermeable to water. For 100% waterproofing, seams will be taped or sealed to prevent any moisture at all from getting in.
    • Water-Resistant Changing Robes: These offer some protection from a bit of light rain but might let some moisture in in a heavy downpour. Usually made from fleece-lined fabrics with a durable water-repellant coating (DWC), which helps water bead off the surface without being 100% impermeable.

Fully waterproof robes block moisture no matter how torrential the rain, but they come with some design trade-offs. The need to fully seal or tape seams means that fit and lining may be less refined. Water-resistant robes can offer more flattering tailoring and warmer puffer designs as their construction is less restricted by waterproofing requirements.

Are Vivida’s Changing Robes Waterproof or Water-Resistant?

At Vivida Lifestyle, we value open and honest discourse with our customers. We class our changing robes as weatherproof and water-resistant rather than waterproof, despite their being constructed from 100% waterproof fabrics.

They feature 5000mm waterproof laminate, with a Bionic Finish® Eco PFC-free durable water-repellent coating, and synthetic lambswool fleece lining made from post-consumer recycled polyester. Seams are taped and zips water-resistant, to create a barrier against moisture, but in the heaviest deluge, they might allow a little water ingress.

Our award-winning All-Weather Puffer Changing Robes also feature QuiltedCloud Down Fill that mimics the properties of natural down, easily trapping heat and warming you up. It’s the extra seams that allow us to amp up the snug factor while sacrificing total waterproofing, and honestly, we believe it’s a good trade-off! One of the warmest changing robes for winter swimming that you’ll find.

    Who Needs a Changing Robe?

It might be easier to list who doesn’t need a changing robe- they’re that useful- but these groups would definitely benefit:

    • Watersports Participants: Surfers, swimmers, windsurfers, wakeboarders- if you’re out on the water often, you’ll find huge value in a changing robe. Warm up, dry off, get changed, walk home- your robe will keep you cosy and protected from the elements throughout.
    • Outdoors Enthusiasts: You might not be getting wet, but a weatherproof robe with roomy pockets is an asset when hiking or camping, too. Big enough and warm enough to keep you snug from head to toe no matter what the weather throws at you. No wonder even dog walkers are in on the changing robe secret- there’s plenty of space in the pockets for spare dog treats, too!
    • Beachgoers: That awkward moment trying to dry yourself off with sand flying everywhere, your towel flapping in the wind, modesty gone? A thing of the past with a changing robe! And if the weather changes for the worst?- no problem, take shelter in your robe and let the heavens open.
    • Sports Fans/Spectators: Following your favourite team often comes with heartbreak, compounded by standing around a pitch or field in the wind and drizzle. Win or lose, you can at least stay comfortably warm and dry in your changing robe, all season long.

Essentially, if you’re outside a lot in inclement weather, a changing robe can definitely give your everyday life an easy upgrade. But what features make a good changing robe? Here’s what to look out for:

What Features Should You Look For In a Changing Robe?

      • Waterproofing and Materials: Waterproof outer layers are essential if you’re likely to use your robe in rainy conditions. If you’re going to be in the cold a lot, and warmth is important, look for high-quality fleece lining and quilting, as featured in our Puffer Changing Robes.
      • Seams and Zips: Fully taped or sealed seams are needed for full waterproofing. It’s worth checking for these if you’re going to be out in all weathers, as water-resistant robes will likely lack these features.
      • Coverage and Length: Make sure the length and hood size will offer adequate coverage to keep you warm and dry from your head to your toes. If you’re using your robe for hikes, you may want to opt for a shorter length and tighter fit. For getting changed and dry, a roomier robe allows for greater ease and range of movement. Our changing robes measurement guide can help you find the perfect fit for your needs.
      • Thoughtful Hood and Sleeve Features: Elements like drawstrings, velcro straps, and adjustable cuffs can help fit your robe to your body, amplifying the protection it offers.
      • Size, Weight, and Portability: For travelling any distance, a lighter robe that can be packed down small is essential. Some robes can be heavy and bulky, but might offer more insulation. We like to think we’ve combined the best of both worlds with our All Weather Puffer Changing Robes, which range from just 1.3 to 1.9kg depending on size and are packed full of ultra-lightweight down-like insulation. They pack down small enough to fit into our All Weather Changing Robe Packaway Bags, which can then double up as a soft pillow when you’re on the road, for ultimate versatility.

With these features in mind, you should be set to decide which robe is right for you.

What Kind of Changing Robe is Best for Your Needs?

For heavy use in the most extreme conditions, a fully waterproof robe is likely best for you. If you’re typically out and about in milder conditions, you can likely sacrifice a bit of waterproofing for style, design, and likely a cheaper price tag. By being clear on your needs and knowing what features to prioritise, you’ll be able to find the perfect changing robe for you.
